A community's sustainability is directly influenced by how wisely its population shepherds its resources; in regards to Southern Nevada, what are local AIA members in the mainstream of practice doing to influence reduced water consumption, improve air-quality, reduce the demands for fossil fuels, and provide for cleaner, alternative forms of energy in their project planning and building designs?

Statistics that stand out are that 2/3rds of all water in the valley is consumed by residential of which 60% is used for irrigation. Conservation seems to be the easiest fix. Convincing the residents and politicians is another. What other communities in this world may serve as good models? Tuscon & Santa Fe of which also share the Colorado River have quadrupled rates in the last years out of necessity. What other ways can we create change?

The image of Las Vegas... an oasis of neon in the night... casinos where the excess is celebrated and the outside world's daylight, wind, hot, cold, poverty, are only a problem if you leave... Las Vegas is where ordinary, practical people escape to from places which lack bright lights, excitement, and a chance to get lucky... Las Vegas is a place where the "real world" is somewhere else... Sustainable Las Vegas... Oxymoron...

I'm still trying to decide if I can support the idea a city in the desert that's totally dependent on water from elsewhere.
