What role does the AIA and the local architectural profession play in creating more and better opportunities for economic development in Southern Nevada?
Our guest experts included economic development strategists from both the city & state level, along with real estate & gaming real estate experts. Numerous challenges were explained along with how the economic development issues relate so intimately with the other 8 key points of discussion at this charrette. A holistic approach & holistic solutions seem to be what will be necessary for a smart & sustainable future. Major topics of our discussions are focused on economic diversification, land-use/zoning issues & the infrastructure necessary to promote sustainable development. stay tuned...
An interesting idea that has come into my thoughts as a result of this charrette and also the lecture by Sim van der Ryn is the idea of creating a "sustainable showcase" in Southern Nevada for the benefit of the entire nation. An article in the recently published Architecture Las Vegas magazine also peaked my interest on this topic. In our team's discussions today/tonight it has become overwhelmingly apparant that some of the most rapid & fruitful "sustainable industries" are those directly related to sustainability and "green" development. As an idea to attract a new industry and new economic opportunity to Southern Nevada would be to make this a hub for manufacturers of recycled products, processors of recycled products, bussinesses directly related to "green building," companies that clean-up brownfield sits, showcase buildings/communities of sustainability, etc. etc. With construction trades being our second largest economic provider, and conventioning being right up there as well...all the players involved with supporting Southern Nevada as a hub for the future of sustainability are in place.
It's something worth exploring maybe & it will be interesting to see how the development of the cluster of sustainable vacation rental houses mentioned in the Architecture Las Vegas article will fare.
Over the last 20 hours, we have had a successful collaborative working session. As a team we have identified 3 key topics- Diversification, Land Sprawl, & Infrastructure; in order to sustain the continued economic growth of our valley and provide a more livable community.
P.S. We have officially overdosed on junk food and caffeine.
Las Vegas... the strip, the lights, the shows, the crowds, the congestion... depends on a steady stream of tourists for survival... and Las Vegas survival clogs I-15 on weekends and congests McCarran and airports around the country during spring break, new year's eve and other peak times... Las Vegas tourism is an engine of unsustainable travel patterns by air and car that must be dramatically increased to fill the multi billions of dollars of new investment now in the pipeline...gotta fill those rooms... so lets hurry up and build a new bigger better airport (and jetfuel pipeline) farther from town so that we can exhaust our resources at an ever increasing rate... expand the market, attract bigger conventions, increase real estate prices, light up the night sky, heat the whole desert, steal all the water, ... celebrate colorful Las Vegas... any color but Green...
