The demand for public safety in Southern Nevada is exasperated by asocial behavior, gang-related crime and the homeless. What can the AIA and architects do through their work and community efforts to make this a "Place" that is safe for residents and tourists alike?

How much more of the valley can we pave over? Extending and expanding our roadway system is just about at its limits. Both roadways and expressways are not only expensive to construct, but they're even more expensive to maintain. Indirect costs associated with roadways affect all of us through demands for gasoline to travel farther for daily trips - and for more power for air-conditioning our houses at night. What examples of alternative modes of transportation does the AIA and the local architectural community support - and how is that support provided?

How can sustainable community development be enhanced through transportation and transit?

Public Safety and Public Transportation are two of the burning topics we are facing here in Las Vegas. We (The Public Safety / Transportation Focus Group) have been working all night to come up with a variety of conceptual ideas that will stimulate discussion for future growth and vitality in the Las Vegas valley. We would like to thank all of the focus group charrette participants that inspired our late night discussions.

In Las Vegas... vehicle miles traveled per capita increases every year... why?... because single use low density zoning regulations induces growth patterns that require us to drive more miles to chase the dream of a better life... land use planning is the biggest transportation problem we are faced with...

Is Las Vegas the neon oasis of fun in the desert an image that will continue to draw tourists in droves as it becomes more and more congested?... will a time come when the local traffic chokes off the tourist traffic?... will Las Vegas commit suicide?...

What about moving sidewalks as an alternative to monorail, buses and taxis to move people up and down the strip...
