In support of the AIA 150 nation-wide celebration, the Las Vegas chapter has chosen to conduct a 24-hour Town Hall Meeting & Design Charrette based on the core objectives of the “Blueprint for America” Initiative. This will occur begin on April 13 at noon at the Paul Sogg Architecture Building in the Architecture Studies Library and continue through 1:30pm on April 14th.
Your knowledge and presence is needed to discuss the future of Southern Nevada as a Livable and Sustainable Community. This concentrated around-the-clock design charrette is a unique opportunity for the public, business and civic leaders to join with architects and design professionals in a collaborative effort to identify problematic issues, develop and create potential solutions and initiate a more sustainable and livable future for our city. And yes, the 24-hour Charrette is actually a full 24 hours, but don't let that scare you because the charrette will! be exciting and fun! The 24-hour Town Hall Meeting is open to all members of the community.
The local Las Vegas chapter of the AIA has chosen to conduct a 24-hour Town Hall Meeting / Design Charrette, based on the core objectives of the "Blue Print for America" initiative, in support of the AIA 150 nation wide celebration.
This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a diverse and creative group of local community members to help identify local livable community issues, develop and elaborate on potential solutions to the issues, and present those findings to a prominent group of local leaders and decision makers.
The subject and focus of the 24-hour Town Hall Meeting will be on how to make Las Vegas a more livable community. The results of this 24-hour "ideas" session will be later memorialized in a "Blueprint for Nevada" document (one section for Reno and one section for Las Vegas) which will be presented to the Governor and/or public officials at the end of 2007.
The Eight Focus Groups for the 24-Hour Town hall Meeting Discussion are:
1. RESOURCES (Water, Energy, Utilities, Communications)
2. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (Gaming, Employment, Tourism)
3. PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
4. EDUCATION
5. SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE & WELLNESS

We are 26 year residents in Paradise Palms. Our chief concerns are traffic/transportation, crime, and lack of infill mixed use developement. I was thrilled to attend the Morelli House Dedication and hear about a new intiative called Very Vintage Vegas.com to help restore older 50s-80s neighborhoods.
I would like to see the following ideas implemented. 1.Nodal point zoning integrating rapid transit and high/mixed density developement at geographically logical points. I would also like to see existing school, library, government building parking lots/garages redeveloped with parking and transit shelters at or below grade with affordable and market rate housing constructed above. I would also like to see better coordination of schools, libraries, community centers with mixed and shared use. ie: A junior high campus could be developed or redeveloped with expanded joint school/public library public resource center. Also both child and senior citizen daycare, kindergarten, health clinic, gallery and performance space and boys/girls club uses be integrated to develop "whole communities".
Finally I feel sprawling single level retail/commercial/professional developments should be banned as uneconomic, ungreen and contributing to energy/water waste. Employee/customer housing options should be part of upper floors and or interior and rear or side courtyards.
AIA Las Vegas is thrilled with the public response to our 24-Hour Town Hall Meeting. Over 200 people attended the opening session and the lecture on "Ecological Design" by Sim Van der Ryn ....and then participated in the collaborative sessions to identify the problematic issues of our community. Currently the charrette sessions are in progress all the groups are working enthusiastically. At noon tomorrow, the results of this over night charrette will be presented with Mayor Goodman, Mayor Gibson, Commissioner Chip Maxfield and other local political leaders in attendance. This is a great first step toward creating a more sustainable and livable future for our city.

which will begin at Noon. Almost everyone actually worked through the night. Many of them left around five this morning to go home, shower and return to get their presentations together. It turned out to be a 26-Hour event.....with extremely exciting and informative presentations by each of the focus groups...and a very enthusiastic response from Mayor Oscar Goodman, Mayor Jim Gibson, Commissioner Chip Maxfield and Carolyn Edwards from the Clark County School District Board of Education.
